Snap Ship

Today I was unable to get Paypal to print a shipping label - after shutting down & trying 2 browsers, I gave up.

I went to Canada Post website - they have (new to me) Snap Ship with a promo extra discount when you use it, until July.

An expedited parcel to the US which was going to be $23.55 on Paypal - cost me $21.91 on CP Snap Ship.

Plus - bonus - it worked on my iMac just fine which the CP EST often doesn't.  So, quite glad Paypal didn't work today.

If this is old news to everyone (I'm often the last to know stuff) I'm sorry - thought I would let people know about this rare CP savings.

That question was answered by eBay staff a few days ago.

PayPal (no longer owned or controlled by eBay) wants out of that "postage printing" business.  There is not enough profit in it for them.  They want to concentrate their efforts on the profitable payment side of the business.

And life does go on.

If that's the case then they'll also be slowly eliminating USPS shipping.

Are they?

Your post suggested that you've been using other sites.  That's why I asked.

Currently, there's a PP issue with light packets but that seems to be sporadic.  Apparently at the same time the CP site doesn't even offer Light Packet and it's also having other issues which are not occurring on PP.  By comparison the PP issue isn't nearly as serious as CP's many issues are.

Otherwise, PP shipping has been running smoothly for a long long time now.  It looks like they finally have a lot of the bugs out but it took them years to get to this point.  Why move from PP shipping now that it's working well for us.

What does make sense is having alternate sites in addition to CP's site to use as backups when there are occasional glitches, like now.

Please show me where I suggested that I used other sites as that was not my intention.  If I had used them I would have said whether I thought they were on par with PP but you were the one saying they weren't on par. I was simply wondering how you knew that.  It seems that you assumin that.

No one else  is comparing cp and pp so I'm not sure what your point is.  Both sites can be unreliable though the cp site is defenitely more clunky to use at time.    As far as pp working smoothly...it's been months since some countries were added to international Tracked Packet and they are still not available in pp.  To be honest I havent had a lot of problems with them although in the last year many people have been unable to print labels for days and pp customer service has no idea why since pp isn't who actually looks after the shipping system.

i honestly have no idea if Shippo will be a better label provider or not but eBay has already made the decision so I am being realistic as well as optimistic.

I'm not following.  What does eBay.ca changing from pp to Shippo have to do with usps and why would eBay eliminate it?

You do realize that we will still be printing Canada Post labels through Shippo?

In a way, it already happened, because americans have been able to ship directly through eBay for many years now. I don't remember what the service is called, but americans have had the choice between PP and eBay for many years.

Good morning everyone.  Thanks so much for pointing out the issues with PayPal label printing.  We are aware of the issue (see our announcement for more details), and we are working hard to get a resolution.

In short, PayPal recently made a change to the label printing flow, requiring sellers to register for a new Canada Post account or link an existing one, to their PayPal account.  When this linkage is made, it seems as though eBay sellers see the rates & services for Canada Post's "Solutions for Small Business" offering, rather than eBay rates & services.

As we announced in January of this year, this was an expected behaviour change for labels that were printed when sellers go directly to PayPal, but no change was to be made to the behaviour when sellers click on "Print shipping label" in My eBay.

We are currently working with PayPal to reverse the change on the eBay flow and will keep you updated on progress.

We think the issue stems from PayPal accounts being associated with the Canada Post "Solutions for Small Business" rate plan.   The SFSB plan doesn't offer Light Packet online, which may explain why it is missing.

We are working to get PayPal to reverse the changes and I will give a status update ASAP.

Re: Snap Ship

hlmacdon,

You are right yet again!  Once we have made the cutover from PayPal to Shippo (in the next month or two - we will send out communiciations), sellers will be able to link their eBay accounts and all of their eBay transactions will all be imported into Shippo.  That means sellers will be able to print labels either from My eBay, or by going directly to Shippo, even in bulk.

Further, rates and services will be consistent regardless of how you print the label, as long as you print a label for an eBay transaction on Shippo.

Re: Snap Ship

Hi qottie

Quick question, if I may:

Will Shippo be managed by Pitney Bowes, the current manager/administrator of the system?  Or will someone else manage the program for Bay?

Hi Pierre,

My pleasure to try to help answer your question.  Pitney Bowes will not be involved in the Shippo system if I understand correctly.  Effectively, Shippo works with the Rating APIs directly from the big carriers (for instance Canada Post), to provide accurate rates and services for shipping with that carrier.

They are able to provide "rack rates" for the carriers, but also "shipper-specific" rates - ie. if a seller has an account with Canada Post, they can link their individual CP account to Shippo to access those rates.  To provide eBay rates, we will effectively piggyback on this execution to provide "eBay-specific" rates.

I believe PB will still be involved in some of the other places on eBay where we require rates, but not in the label printing process.  Does this help / make sense?

Re: Snap Ship

I had received an email from Canada Post regarding their new Snap Ship a few weeks ago. I did not bother trying it as I have always used Paypal for printing my labels as it is convenient - the address info is already there, it is charged automatically to my PayPal acct. several days ago I was unable to,print labels off PayPal as described by other sellers on this thread. I had 3 labels I needed to print

so decided to give Snap Ship a try. You have to be signed up  for Canada Post's Solution for Small Business (formerly Ventures One). The labels are cheaper (not sure they will continue to be after their promo period ends in July). But it does of course take much longer as you must fill in the buyer's address, plus buyer's phone # is a required field. Also for each label printed I needed to fill in all my credit card info (did not see an option for PayPal). First label printed then next 2 did not. They do send confirmations of the labels by email & give you 5 days to print from the the link in it. Fortunately I was able to print my labels from the emails.

I did complete a CP survey indicating the issues. Bottom line if your time is worth anything this service is not likely to replace the convenience of what we currently have ( although not at this time till issues resolved)

Not sure if other sellers will share my opinion but just wanted to share my experience with the new CP service.

All,

PayPal released a fix to the shipping labels flow was earlier this afternoon, and we think that the service should be back to normal.

Specifically, when eBay sellers choose "Print Shipping Label" on My eBay, and enter the label printing flow on PayPal:

  • sellers should no longer be asked to register or connect their Canada Post account before printing a label
  • "eBay-negotiated" Canada Post rates and services (including Light Packet for US / International destinations) should be showing up again as options for label printing

Please do not hesitate to reach out if you are still having issues with printing labels.  We will continue to work with PayPal to resolve any outstanding issues that arise.  Thanks for your patience as we worked with PayPal to resolve the issues.

Re: Snap Ship

I had a problem earlier today as well but was able to sign in tonight after I read how another poster managed to sign in.

Make sure you are signed out of your small business account and then to canadapost.ca and sign in there using the link at the top. Click on your sign on name at the top to get the menu and then click on dashboard. There should be a snap ship link on the right. When I clicked on that, I was taken right there...no endless loop.

Re: Snap Ship

I had login problems too but it seemed like something to do with my password being autofilled in. When I typed it in manually it logged in fine.

Personally I think Snap ship is leaps and bounds better than EST or ship in a  click, and the 15% is quite nice.
