Keep careful records.

You have to declare your income (profit) from online sales to the taxman.

If you are earning $30K annually you also have to register to collect sales taxes (GST federally and your provincial sales tax /HST/PST/QST)

I'm sure lots of people make much more than that, and many also make much less than that, because ebay provides a venue for part timers and full timers.

One of the most important things for you to understand before you go heavy into this (in my opinion) are your costs of selling, including all the ebay fees, shipping, lost and broken items, or insurance etc.

Generally at the minimum you need to at least be doubling your money when you sell anywhere online, but that probably depends on the categories and relevant costs of selling.

Any advice you get here is from folks from a very diverse group of selling even folks selling in the same category as reallynice and I do, have markedly different audiences and therefore selling styles, so what I tell you works for me, may not necessarily work for you.

Another thing that will be important to do is look at how others in your category(s) sell stuff, experiment with how you sell your stuff, that way you'll be able to figure out what works best for you.

I've been selling here for over 20 years now and the situation, environment and buyer practices continue to evolve over time, and I have to evolve with them.

Spending time here learning from others what trials and tribulations we experience is also time well spent. I still learn stuff all the time from these boards, it is also why I try to give back when I've got stuff to add as well....

I had been 'casually' selling on eBay since 1998.  My biggest problem was trying to find a reliable supply. I've bought inventory just about everywhere you can imagine (and probably a few you can't!), my goal was always buy at maximum of 1/3 of current SOLD prices (if comparables exist) in order to pad in the fees and and sometimes shipping cost overruns, spoilage, no-sale items, etc.  The problem I kept having was trying to restock at the price I needed to pay to make a profit on the other end.  Or the market would become saturated, either demand dwindled or larger sellers took over and smashed prices into the basement.

I had some decent selling periods, where I'd make a lot more than your goal, but also a lot of dry periods too.

In 2016 I re-branded to focus on powersports parts, as I had purchased a small inventory.. literally one shelving unit.. and just started listing part-time.  One item at a time..

Once I hit around 500 items listed, and could keep rolling in new inventory as the current stuff sold (my goal was only to list 10/day on average) we hit 5k/month in sales pretty quickly or ~1500 profit.  The more time that I devoted to it, the more listings I could make, and we're currently sitting around 10k unique items at any given time.  needless to say, it is now my fulltime gig.

One other aspect is to figure out how you are going to price the items. If you can have a large enough store to take advantage of the maximum discounts, as well as shipping 1-2 days handling time and "free" shipping (included in your price) then you can get some decent margins off your fees on the back end and allows you to potentially sell cheaper than others, or at least make a bit more margin at the end of the day.

...

TL/DR:

Do it, start with a single listing and then list as often and as much as you can.
