Okay.
Seeing as we're in a sharing mood, I don't plan on buying from anybody in the United States using UPS Standard or FedEx Ground as a shipping method, for what it's worth.

Your potential seller may well not know they are enrolled in the GSP and will certainly have no idea how much the buyer is asked to pay.
Unless they are told they may never know.

I would NEVER buy using GSP, etc. Having said that I went into two of my Saved Sellers who I used to buy small items from frequently, but haven't for a while. Saw they had both gone to GSP. I emailed them asking if they were aware of how much more it would cost me from the last time I purchased from them. Got a very quick reply from one who was apologizing profusely! - she had no idea what her Cdn. buyers would be paying - in other words they put her on it and she was unaware and actually she mentioned the fact that she was wondering in the last while why her Cdn. buyers weren't buying any more. She opted out - sent me a note when it was done. Voila - I purchased. Haven't heard back from the other one which is strange - she could have maybe said she opted in - who knows. Anyway, after my long spiel here - If you are really interested in something, it's worth a try sending the seller a very polite note.

I tried that route once with a seller,I gave up after realizing they (the US sellers)may be well aware that ebay had put them up with GSP initially without their knowledge but now it is likely inconsequential to their bottom line ,so most not all just leave it the way it is.
I might try to ask the next seller to opt out of GSP again but I feel ,I shouldn't ever be in a position to ask that just for my sake, here's the cut and paste of my correspondence with the seller:
Hi,I am looking for a BP monitor, was really interested in your listing till I found out you are enrolled with GSP program (Knowingly or inadvertently),This is the point where most of your potential Canadian buyers stop .
GSP will cost us more for importation fees, taxes, etc, etc,we in general avoid USA sellers who use GSP, instead of USPS.
I don't expect a reply ,just wanted to let you know people on this side of the border don't give your listing a second look or any seller who use GSP.
My intention for sending this email was just to let you know in case you were not aware that Ebay probably has done you and us a disservice.
Thank you for taking the time to read my email .
Regards.

The seller thanked me for my email and basically said she's happy with GSP,she did not sell internationally before GSP but since she has SIGNED UP,she has sold lots of things with no hassle,so she says:"no problem. Sorry you are missing out on lots of good things".

My take on it is this: If you run into a GSP seller who "ships to Canada and many other countries" as opposed to shipping worldwide (i.e. shipping directly to buyers who are located in non-GSP "supported" countries), you're likely looking at a seller who's not done much if any international shipping prior to the GSP. This seller is either aware or not aware that they've opted into the program and may or may not understand what you're talking about.
In the (I hope) increasingly rare instance of a seller offering the GSP and "worldwide" shipping, you'll probably be more likely to get compliance with a polite request to trash it, as this seller likely has an inkling of what's going on. They may still be unaware that they're actually using the GSP, but at least they should be aware that something's affecting their sales to Canada.

You are right, changes will be made once they are aware that it is the GSP system/program that's causing a decline in their sales but unfortunately buyers like myself have to take on the role of notifying them.
I just don't get something, ebay in order to generated more sale came up with gsp, then buyers don,t like it and ask sellers to opt out, sellers opt out of GSP,so what did ebay get, unhappy buyers, unhappy seller, was this a gamble on ebay's part ? to hope most buyers (with big ticket items )will be happy and most sellers will therefore stay loyal?I wonder if the gamble has paid off,we will soon see,I still see excited US sellers who are tickled to death with those few extra sales.(by reading the above reply I posted).

Agreed to the above poster alot of usa sellers or anyone else in the global shipping program might not understand that their auctions or ebay items have the gsp PITNEY BOWES GLOBAL SHIPPING PROGRAM included in their price therefore what I have been doing is asking the sellers who use this program and telling them that I am being charged a certian amount [$ 8.43] or insert your charge there; and telling them that this global shipping program is incorrectly applied and does not work to benefit Canadian buyers, because we Canadian buyers never had to pay these charges in the first place on most items.
after spending your time and effort the same way I am doing now, copy and paste your message to the sellers into a wordpad, rich text or text file document save it to your computer and whenever you are cruising ebay for things to buy and you see that a seller is using the global shipping program you can copy and paste your previous message into where you send messages to the seller "ask seller a question"

There's a part of me that wonders if eBay's also trying to separate the wheat from the chaff. The GSP can have the effect of getting rid of a lot of bad sellers as well as bad buyers. The net result is a happier eBay, and a happier eBay means potentially more sales for individual sellers.

Anyone who knows how to sell internationally will do it alot more effectively without GSP ...
I bought something 2 times and that is it .. I paid seller $10 shipping then without any notice pitney bowes charged me $22 for shipping ..
That is cost that I was not aware when clicked buy now... Hidden fees do not equal more sales and a happier ebay ...
The problem is tooooooo many people are too lazy to figure out international selling.. It is very easy once you take a day to learn what you need to ..
In fact GSP has the same rules and restrictions as most carriers so what is the point...
I never buy with UPS until I learnt a few things ... Now I can buy $2500 worth of my norm with no duties and $21 flat rate brokerage all I have to pay is minor brokerage and Tax it makes it cheaper the Canada post for big purchases..
If your a busines you can open a brokerage account with UPS and it makes things muchhhhhhhhhhh cheaper...
People are kidding themselves with this worthless GSP program... You wanna protect your DSR know your stuff and be a good seller...
GSP is for lazy sellers and lazy sellers are no the ones I wanna buy from ... GRanted there are many who don't know there in it but the rest that do.. To me are just to lazy to figure it out for themselves..

You are justifiably moaning about ignorant sellers, but I fail to see how any but the most ignorant buyer could fail to see the amount they were agreeing to pay before they committed to buy.
It might be possible if you were signed in to ebay.com, then looked at an item and then for some reason looked at the shipping and payments page of that item and changed the ship to destination to a US zipcode, then went on to look at other items, but your shiping location should have showed up before actual checkout.
I'd like to see a really precise description of just how people managed to buy a GSP item without knowing it.

I can tell you from my very limited experience using my smartphone that listing pages for GSP items don't actually mention the program, although the import charges are still pretty clearly spelled out. I don't know if more information is forthcoming after the "buy it now" button is hit, though. I would think it ought to be seeing as committing to purchase the item means that one also agrees to the terms and conditions of the GSP.

I don't have one of those gadgets, don't see the need as I have no friends to call, so I can't experiment with that aspect. Clicking on a GSP BIN should show the next screen when you can still back out. You could try that.

To be honest, I can't be bothered, but I may give it a go if nobody else can offer any satisfactory answers to your question. 🙂

In that particular instance you posted, it sounds as though proper procedures weren't followed. The seller shouldn't have been out of pocket for a lost shipment if it were in the hands of the Global Shipping Program's contractors. In addition, the seller mentions having had to pay "the high cost of shipping." The shipping costs should have been no different than for a domestic sale. Something went wrong somewhere.
At least they figured out they should switch back to direct shipments to their non-U.S. buyers.

Even experienced sellers, near 11000 feedback for this one, can have serious problems with the GSP.

Hi chimera148.
I took a look at the post you referenced ("Re: Global Shipping Program-Opinions?"), and posted some additional info there. Afantiques had already posted a reply but I added an extra two cents.
As marnotom already posted, the international portion is not applied by the seller, but by eBay/Pitney Bowes. So in a case of item not received or damaged in international transit, the seller is not responsible for refund.
Hope that helps.
