Canadian Banks and US dollars- Managed Payments.

Well, no.

I for one sell in both US dollars (dotCOM)  and in Canadian dollars (dotCA) on two of my IDs and those IDs have both been told to sign up for Managed Payments.

Hi @femmefan1946 - happy to help, just got to get my disclaimers out of the way first:

As someone who is not an expert on managed payments I may not be able to address your question in its entirety. If you have been notified to register for managed payments you are able to request a call back from a payments-trained teammate by accessing any of the Help Pages related to payments and using the 'Have us call you' feature at the bottom of the page.

The information provided is accurate as of today's date (20 July 2020) but may become outdated in the future. If you are reading this at a later date please consider checking the Help Pages or request a call back from a managed payments teammate who can provide the most up to date information.

While a buyer can pay you with PayPal when you're registered for managed payments, your PayPal account isn't involved. So while there would be a PayPal transaction in the buyer's account, it would not necessarily mean that your PayPal account would register an order for you to use in printing a label.

I'm not incredibly familiar with their shipping options - can you use their label service without a specific transaction to tie it to?

tyler@ebay

No, we currently can not use Paypal's label service without a specific ebay transaction linked to it.  Years ago we could sign into Paypal.com/shipnow and start a label that wasn't associated with an ebay sale but they blocked that option for Canadians quite a few years ago.  But for some reason US sellers can still use that option.

To confirm...we will still be able to use Shippo and the ebay transaction info will still be linked to Shippo even once this new ebay label program starts?

I think that it is important that Shippo continues to be available. Based on reading US board posts over the years, the ebay label system definitely has its glitches, especially this latest version and it would be nice to have other options.

Re: Canadian Banks and US dollars- Managed Payments.

Tyler: I'm very concerned about losing the ability to print shipping labels with Paypal. The discount Canada Post provides there is better than their counter rates if I pay at the local post office. This is an issue that needs to be addressed and clarified ASAP. If I am unable to continue printing labels with Paypal it will create a huge problem in processing orders.

If you use Shippo, ebay's soon to be label program or Snap Ship, you should pay the same cost as you do on Paypal as all are based on your CP Small business level.

PayPal has the same online discount as Canada Post's SnapShip.

Over-the-counter rates only have savings value when using discounted postage stamps.

@forester_studios

When you go to the PO and buy a label, are you telling them you belong to Solutions for Small Business?

You have to be signed up for that (it used to be VentureONE)  to get the PP and Shippo discounts.

All three, and online SnapShip discounts, are the same.

Re: Canadian Banks and US dollars- Managed Payments.

Hi Femme - I have a Solutions for Small Business card that I give them. Still the occasional times I've paid at the counter were less of a discount. I think perhaps ebay had an extra discount with paypal. Anyway that's my experience. My main point is still valid though. It will be a huge pain in the butt if I need to start doing customs labels by hand. It is so easy to have ebay's prefilled info label ready to print when I log into Paypal.

You do get less of a discount at the counter than the discount you get if you buy the label online directly from Canada Post.   Expedited parcel in Canada this month (the current Canada Post rate promo ends July 31) is just under 5% at the counter versus 29% when bought through the Canada Post website.

eBay used to have a better discount through paypal for certain Canada Post services, but that advantage went way over 4 years ago. Discounts for PayPal = Shippo = CP's Snapship

Hand filled customs labels (CN22) are being phased out by Canada Post (Jan/2021).

* Shippo is currently one alternative to PayPal with prefilled ebay info.

* If ebay ever gets it launched you will be able to buy shipping labels via ebay  (if in managed payments the cost could be deducted from the sale money).

* There are other companies that will import ebay data (ChitChats, ShipStation).

* You could lobby paypal to allow Canadians to still buy shipping when ebay's managed payments kicks in

Hi @pjcdn2005 - Let me run this up the flag pole to get crystal clear  - I don't want to risk being incorrect on something as significant as shipping.

I'll keep you posted as I hear back!

Re: Canadian Banks and US dollars- Managed Payments.

Hi @pjcdn2005 - heard back on this:

Shippo uses eBay APIs. We've updated those so there should be no change to the experience. It should continue to work as it does today.

It sounds like PayPal will not be an option unless they let you create a shipping label without a transaction, so Shippo will be the best choice going forward until such time as the eBay label platform is released.

Paging @forester_studios on this answer as well. Shippo may be the best solution for you for simple label printing once you are enrolled in managed payments.

Tyler,

Re: Canadian Banks and US dollars- Managed Payments.

I've never used Shippo and do not plan to. Too many horror stories. Tyler if ebay wants my business long term, get a solution to this problem that ebay has created pronto! Ebay should have had a shipping label printing solution ready months before they launched managed payments. This is not acceptable!!!

Lots of horror stories about PayPal over the years too.  And I'm sure ebay's new shipping option when it finally arrives, will also generate it's own horror stories.

But if your personal preference is paypal, then you have to lobby paypal to allow Canadians to buy shipping for non-paypal transactions (which is what managed payments will be).

Re: Canadian Banks and US dollars- Managed Payments.

Seems they are listening for a change. I complained and this was a message sent to our company today.

Thanks for registering for managed payments! We've identified your business as one that likely sells to the US or on the US site directly. We understand that you may currently get paid out in multiple currencies, which is not currently supported with managed payments. As a result, we've delayed your activation for managed payments while we work on a solution. In the meantime, you can continue selling as usual. Our goal is to make this transition as seamless as possible and we will only activate your account for managed payments once the available features match your business needs.

Re: Canadian Banks and US dollars- Managed Payments.

Oh brother. They still haven't even begun to figure this out? I have to assume the percentage of Canadian sellers who list on .com and sell to the US is equal to if not HIGHER than those who don't! Maybe if Canadian sellers agree to stick to selling on EITHER .ca or .com there is a way to get this figured out sooner? I could live with that.

Re: Canadian Banks and US dollars- Managed Payments.

Will not be joining MP, but will continue selling on BOTH .CA and .COM until eBay no longer allows me to do so... and all Canadian sellers have the right to do whatever is in their best interests. As a seller who left Etsy back in 2017 due to not agreeing to their  Etsy Payments system (Adyen), I will happily delay the inevitable here on eBay to give my other selling venue more time to bring in more consistent sales...

Re: Canadian Banks and US dollars- Managed Payments.

I was so happy to see your post.

I am the world's biggest procrastinator when it comes to policies that appear very complex and cumbersome.  Aside from an early communication issued by eBay months ago, and a few comments I've read on this Board, I know very little about MP and didn't care to learn anything further until I absolutely needed to.  I function best when I'm under the gun.  When the program becomes mandatory for everyone, then I'll be forced to learn how the h--l it works.

In the meantime, I hope my invitation is a long time coming.  Having said that, though, as a seller on both .ca and .com, I found your post reassuring.  I hope the multiple currency issue takes a long time getting sorted out.

Re: Canadian Banks and US dollars- Managed Payments.

I created a label on PayPal the other day with NO SALE. Just filled in my friends mailing address manually and worked fine.

Might work for others?

So if I read that correctly we are going to be paying FVF on sales tax as well?

I have not yet received an email re signing up for MP. I sell on both .com & .ca & my PayPal account is a US dollar account attached to a US bank.

Wondering how this will be handled?

Re: Canadian Banks and US dollars- Managed Payments.

If you list on .com in USD and or have your ebay fees billed in USD you'll be in the last group for managed payments at a later date based on what the reps have been posting.

Re: Canadian Banks and US dollars- Managed Payments.

Paypal has been charging FVF on the Internet Sales Taxes that our customers have been paying for the past year.

On a $100 sale with $10 shipping and 5% sales tax, the buyer will be billed $115.50.

We would pay 30c + 3.7% FVF on that or--$4.57 to Paypal.

The principle being that PP processed the whole amount, so they get paid a processing fee on the whole amount.

Grrr.

With Managed Payments there would be no change* in those fees.

Because the Internet Sales Tax is a sloppy way of saying "state sales tax which will vary from state to state and not all of them charge any taxes for online purchases and not always on the same goods and any way the IST have been introduced over the past year state by state"  you may not have noticed.

For a few days there it looked like eBay was not going to charge the MP fee on Internet Sales Taxes, but some bright spark noticed and that break disappeared.

*Wellllll, actually.... I'm not sure what the Managed Payment fee on US sales will be. It is 2.9% on domestic sales, which is the same as PP's domestic fee.
