Continue Selling on eBay is it worth it?

It seems that eBay is not what it use to be! I started to sell on eBay when I thought it was safer than say Kijiji and the fact that PayPal was the method of receiving funds without my bank account being affected was a bonus. Now it seems the seller will pay a 20.00 fee for all these " I didn't get my order yet - even though tracking shows on progress" Or email the seller many times to cancel an order. Which now bank fees would be charged with this new MP but not with PayPal.

Opening a new account separate from personal is one answer but not for all the additional expenses that come with MP.  Where are sellers able to charge for canceled orders for their banking fees they will pay. Sure I know the cost of doing business but it seems to be getting higher and higher with eBay. How about the fact the MP states 5 plus days to get deposited into the account. Unlike PayPal where you saw this payment instantly and could ship? Great thing this electronic banking where your money is held in the air for up to 5 days!!!  Has eBay made any adjustments for any of this when it comes to shipping the sold item? I doubt it - they still send messages to buyers as to when to expect and do not follow the news as to Chicago plant holding mail for three weeks according to tracking or Toronto when whole shifts sent home due to COVID outbreak.  No expectation of delivery is adjusted and the complaints come through regularly. Usually, just an email of inquiry but some claim no received immediately. The honest few will offer to pay for items but most get for free.

Is it really worth all that and more? I am going to close my store and give the wait and see. I have already listed on other sites with a little success without all the **bleep** of eBay rules and money-grabbing regulations. If this is the last time I speak with all of you the best of luck.  Rant ended.

Not trying to add fuel to the fire here, but just FYI, kijiji is owned by eBay.

Re: Continue Selling on eBay is it worth it?

No.

PP and MP both will charge a $20 fee if the seller refuses to co-operate with the Dispute and also loses.

So if you show tracking proving delivery, you win. No refund. No fee.

If you agree that there is no proof of delivery and refund, there is no fee.

If you refuse to refund, and eBay and Paypal both demand proof of DELIVERY not of shipping, you lose the dispute and in addition to the fee have a Defect on your account.

Or email the seller many times to c

ancel an order.

If the Buyer asks for a cancellation, the Seller can cancel with no blowback.

The two reasons a Seller can comfortably cancel a purchase are "Buyer Request" and "Problem with Delivery".

The refund of the payment, and of the Seller's FVF, is automatic.

If the item is already shipped, this will require more communication.

I am ...bemused... by the "many times". When a buyer tells you he doesn't want it, believe him.

Not every transaction will go perfectly.  It's business, not personal

Which now bank fees would be charged with this new MP but not with PayPal.

No.

This policy is a direct copy from PP's contract.

Re: Continue Selling on eBay is it worth it?

Ummm. No.

All that Paypal promises is that the seller cannot see the financial information of the buyer. The payment may be coming from a credit card or a bank account or a PP balance, but the seller does not know.

The payment is anonymized.

And conversely, the buyer does not see any financial information about the seller. Not even her address. (That shows up on the shipping label.)

@twojblues

way too much information [personal] plus SIN number?

No.

That idea has been stomped on by eBay in the person of tyler@ebay.

We are allowed to give our SIN voluntarily, but eBay cannot demand it. Some of the forms still have incorrect wording based on the US form, where SSN can be demanded.

You can use a driver's license or  passport number. You do need more identification, unless you like the idea of hijacked accounts.

Re: Continue Selling on eBay is it worth it?

If a buyer files a claim through eBay it will work the same as it always has, there is no extra $20 fee.  That fee is only paid if there is a payment dispute outside of eBay and the seller refuses to refund and then loses the case. If they win the  case, there is no charge.  As an fyi, PayPal also charged that $20 fee if the seller challenged a cc chargeback and lost.

I'm not sure what banking fees you are referring or why you say there are extra fees with MP but there are chequing accounts that don't have any fees.

Ultimately it's a personal decision on whether or not you want to sell here. Although I would also prefer to stay with PP, the change to MP isn't so bad  that it makes me want to quit.

Re: Continue Selling on eBay is it worth it?

yes Kijiji is owned by eBay and it matters not...

I have successfully been using Kijiji for many years> works great for local pickup items, large/heavy/bulky items and "stuff" that simply isn't suitable for shipping elsewhere... and who cares who owns it as long as it is a workable solution to replace eBay...I much prefer Kijiji to eBay...

FB Marketplace also works very well and is a great replacement for eBay...

There are so many options/choices to eBay....long live those places that allow sellers to do what they do best>SELL their items THEIR way!  Life can be great without eBay!!

Re: Continue Selling on eBay is it worth it?

Yes, Kijiji is great for certain items, but it really only caters to your local area. Also, since its owned by ebay, there is a very high chance that they will start charging fees just like ebay.

Again, FB marketplace really only caters to your local area, it does not replace ebay in my experience.

There is not many viable options for Canadian sellers other than ebay in my opinion.

Re: Continue Selling on eBay is it worth it?

no worries, no matter - Kijiji still works for higher price items/collectibles/vintage etc. Have sold such to collectors/buyers out of province. Seller & buyer work out their own payment/pickup/shipping details. Same applies to FB Marketplace.

Canadian Sellers can & do find other ways, there is more to online selling than eBay...
