I was reading this article on Ebay and it states that as of January 2025, anyone with over 30 sales will have to provide a SIN number.
https://www.ebay.ca/help/account/regulatory/sales-reporting/canada-digital-sales-reporting?id=5476#s...
It seems like quite a drastic update and I'm surprised more people haven't been talking about it.

Somewhat wrong, providing a SIN was one OPTION, micro deposits was another.
At that time if you did provide an SIN immediately after verification you could remove it. Some time in the last couple of years the ability to remove went away. I have multiple selling accounts I did one via SIN and the others via micro deposit.

You weren't wrong, I gave my SIN when I signed up for MP.
They have not sent me any new or recent messages asking for it again. I'm well past both the $2800 threshold and the 30 item threshold, so I think they would have asked again if they misplaced it.
I would think if you gave it when you signed up for MP, you're good for these changes. When you signed up for MP, at the time, giving up the SIN was voluntary. I gave it up because I knew at some point later it would become compulsary for CRA and did not want any interuptions in my sales later on.

Interesting, on the account I gave my SIN (not this id) eBay did request my SIN in January. This seems to confirm that when I removed it from my profile it was actually removed.

I also gave them my SIN when I signed up for Managed Payments, but still got the red flag on my account last week saying they needed it. I just gave it to them again.

Hmm, hasn't happened to me yet. I had a recent payout that exceeded their threshold, so I'm thinking if they haven't asked me by now, they've got it and all is good. I have no issues giving it again if necessary.

No, and I just checked both the .com site where I list, and .ca site to see if I could find a place where it's hidden to be downloaded, but did not see.
I thought reports had to be done by today, however some people posted that their accountant says the reporting is for 2025 and we get notified every quarter (which suggests there's no report for 2024 to be received).

Nothing on there as I wa son a day or so ago to Pay my quarterly taxes. Ebay said they would email us when they submitted the stuff.
"Thanks for taking the time to update your account with your Tax Identification Number. We’ll process your digital sales report and share it with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) by January 31. We will make this information available to you following submission to the CRA. "
If that happened Jan 31 for 2024 sales then its been a month and nothing? If its happening for 2025 sales I guess we would see it in Jan 2026??

Could the report be viewable on My CRA Account?
I just checked, the place I'd expect to find it is where the T4s are kept.
No such luck. I'm wondering if it really does start with reporting for 2025 sales, some people have said their accountant told them this new thing starts in 2025, it hasn't been very clear to me what's going on.
Doesn't matter to me, I report regardless, but I would like my numbers to line up with ebay's and not be a few cents off.

Much like everyone else, this has come as a bit of a surprise as this message from ebay was the first time I heard about providing a Tax Identificiation Number (SIN) to ebay due to digital sales reporting requirements for the CRA.
I'm a fairly small seller (currently around 450-500 items listed) compared to a lot of you guys, I am selling a large portion of items I've collected over the years but I do frequent thrift stores to add to my collection and find other items to sell on ebay for a small profit.
Due to the requirements to report my earnings, my plan is to register my ebay store as an actual business and get an accountant to help do the taxes and write expenses off. I believe I would be able to write off portions of my rent, gas, electricity, computer, cell phone, internet, car, etc... Has anyone else gone this route? I'd prefer not to register my SIN and instead register a Buisness Number (BN). I would appreciate any insight from people on this.

I'm registered as a sole proprietor and it still made me use my SIN. As far as I could tell, the option for using the BN is only for corporations etc.
Depending on where else you sell and where you source, you could also consider getting a GST/HST number. Being able to recover taxes you pay for business related expenses is rather nice.

so is that 2800 limit your TOTAL sales or NET sales?

I’m no accountant, but I figure it would be total sales as eBay fees, etc., would be deducted as business expenses when you record your business activities on your tax return.

so was looking some more and I think your wrong-
so that would be the net sales on here, also states
Your total consideration for the year is calculated based on the full amount received for your sales transactions, excluding:

Your total consideration for the year is calculated based on the full amount received for your sales transactions, excluding:
- Shipping amounts paid to eBay
- GST/HST/PST/QST collected and remitted by eBay
- GST/HST/PST/QST charged on fees
- Amounts deducted by eBay for fees, coupons, cancelled or deleted orders
- Returns
Those may be the rules for the REPORTING that eBay provides to the CRA, they are NOT the requirements for taxpayers when they file returns. Tax filers need to report Gross Revenue and them itimize the deductions.
I hope we don't have to deal with the same endless confusion that has gone on in the US for the past 15 years, people thinking that if you are under the limit for a 1099-K means you don't have to report anything.

What I don't fully understand are those of us who sell our personal possessions and collections on eBay when money starts to get tight. 30 sales and $2800 will be easily surpassed but these are items purchases at retail or eBay collector prices and sold for similar prices (sometimes a loss, sometimes a gain based on scarcity).
My understanding of capital gains is that you owe no taxes on personal items purchased and sold under $1000.
It seems like Canadian tax law is not changing, just the requirements for platforms like eBay. Hard to parse where that leaves many of use who have been selling our personal collectibles/high value items on ebay for some time.

Neither eBay or Canada Revenue know what your individual situation is until you declare your income and file a tax return. If you are selling at a loss or break even your reporting will support this and your tax liability would be nothing or next to nothing.
If you are making a profit how much income tax you might have to pay would depend on how much other income and deductions you have.
