Starting January 2025, Ebay Canada to require SIN number for all sellers with more than 30 sales?

I was reading this article on Ebay and it states that as of January 2025, anyone with over 30 sales will have to provide a SIN number.
https://www.ebay.ca/help/account/regulatory/sales-reporting/canada-digital-sales-reporting?id=5476#s...

It seems like quite a drastic update and I'm surprised more people haven't been talking about it.

@msau4301 I've never seen it. I checked my personal info this week, as well. I think it was probably smart to skip. I think leaving things alone right now is a good idea. The app is sooo buggy right now too! Gets that way whenever they make changes... any changes! Lol

No, it has no impact on me other than yet another entity is collecting information.  And I am also over the 28 sale threshold. ... and I have 5 auctions underway and 4 have bids which may push me over the $ limit anyway.

i'm still not sure if it's 2024 sales or 2025 sales that are counting.   I realize the law was passed in 2023 and it would make sense it started in 2024, but if it did start in 2024, why would all the online companies be waiting until now to start sending out notifications?   Why not just send them out throughout 2024 as sellers crossed one of the threshholds?   Would simplify the process for everyone.

I suppose we'll have our answer by the end of the month.  I had 71 sales in 2024 but was well under $2800.   For this year i have had zero sales so far...lol (not sure why i'm laughing about it).

From what I got of the notification, they're counting 2024 sales, and will fine anyone who doesn't comply. They don't need to get into a back and forth about it if they plan to just issue penalties at a whim to anyone who doesn't cough up the information.

On the US site, they ask for an SSN and hold your payouts if you don't comply (thus preventing you from earning further until you do comply). It sounds like in Canada you have to comply or face a $500. they won't hold payouts, the damage was already done in 2024 and that's what they're going with.

The 30 sales triggered it as I should hit the $2800 in the next day or so.

This was the folow up email I got from ebay after entering my SIN

"

This new sales reporting is for 2025 not 2024. eBay Canada would have to notify Canadian sellers in 2024 if they were seeking sales info for the CRA for that year.

@silverpinups

This is where the confusion lies going by the op's post about this situation.

From the link in first post.

What sellers should know

As a Canadian resident, when you sell over $2,800 or surpass 30 sales transactions within a calendar year, eBay and other marketplaces are obligated to report certain personal or business information to the CRA in accordance with Canada digital sales reporting legislation. eBay will notify you when you have crossed these thresholds. When prompted to do so, please provide eBay the requested tax identification information specific to you as a business or individual. Starting January 2025, the prior year's information will be annually reported to the CRA each January and a copy of the reported data will be provided to you.

I did a deep dive on the dot com board tonight. There were announcements first at end of 2023 and another update in dec 2024. When you check the Canadian board there was nothing about this impending situation and what would happen Jan 2025.

Dec 2023 Announcement dot com:

https://community.ebay.com/t5/Announcements/IRS-announces-another-delay-of-the-600-reporting-thresho...

Dec 2024 Announcement dot com:

https://community.ebay.com/t5/Announcements/IRS-confirms-5-000-reporting-threshold-for-Form-1099-K-f...

Originally this was all passed on on dot com in 2022 for 2023. Due to questions and concerns it was delayed. eBay Canada seller just never got the memo.

One major tidbit from the first post the help page on eBay is NOT dated so no idea when it arrived.

The possible $500 fine has nothing to do with eBay -- that is an option for the CRA (Canada Revenue Agency).

Those .com announcements have absolutely nothing to do with Canada or Canadian sellers?

It's seems pretty clear on the CRA page for Digital PLatform Operators that eBay will be reporting 2024 numbers.

It would have been very nice if the dot com announcements I shared were also shared with Canadian sellers and how it related to the CRA instead of us being caught off guard. The announcements included at the bottom are from the ca history to confirm nothing was sent directed at us.

so,  perhaps hundreds of thousands of sellers are going to have to share their SIN with Ebay.   And if Ebay gets hacked and all that info is stolen who gets sued?  Ebay?  The CRA for forcing people to put private info online?  The Federal Gov't for forcing people to put private information online.....something they constantly warn people against?

eBay has already got your banking information so " if Ebay gets hacked and all that info is stolen ..." What then????

eBay has already" forced" you to provide banking information, so how different is providing the SI# ?

Personally I'd be more concerned about the banking information...

Since the article posted said:  eBay will notify you when you have crossed these thresholds, I think we are okay to wait and get the notification (as regs43 has said she just received). In the meantime we do what we have been doing. Small scale sellers shouldn't have to worry, large scale sellers would (in most cases anyways) already be claiming, there's some in-betweens wondering what to do; but understand you being hesitant to put the SIN in.

I've been on eBay 12 years and at least five times I've had to change my password with the "exposed to a security breach" message, including just yesterday when I went to check out what was in My Account section (it's been a while since I've gone in there). I'm tired of having the crossed out list of passwords. Right now the only trigger seems to be going to the personal account information.

@lotzofuniquegoodieshey lotz- yeah, I agree that communication on this has been botched - well, nonexistent, really. I have a feeling that's because they're not ready. From what I've read online, all digital platforms were required to confirm personal information for sellers that met the 2024 thresholds by Dec 31st. Obviously, this hasn't been done. Ebay is skipping directly to the notification and reporting in January, and for what year, who the heck knows!?. As I said before, this is gonna be a shtshw. I'm thinking this will end up being the "beta" launch for all involved. Forget about trying to work out the process changes with all the people that have no idea what's going on... the software changes alone will keep them all busy for months... maybe years!

When I registered for Managed Payments I used my SIN, when I updated my eBay years ago I used my SIN, and this was always coming.

You sell it, it's income, period...

Do your accounting as it applies to your situation, but the CRA will get all info retro to Jan 2024, just in time for this year's Tax returns, this was announced over 2 years ago, and set for 2025.

@fergua3you hit the nail on the head. When you roll out a change that involves disclosing sensitive information (that you've been warned to never, ever share online) and then you get a 'by the way, now we need this info within 2 weeks' message with no prior warning and buildup of communication, verification and trust, how are people supposed to react? It's obvious they haven't had time to fully implement the changes and we're now supposed to trust that security on their website is govt level security? I can't even post listings on the app without a laundry list of bugs. And then I can't even report them properly because reps I talk to never know what's going on. All I can say is: Yikes!

There's a big differrence, MrDutch.  The bank account i opened for Ebay's MP has no money in it.  When Ebay transfers money to me i take it out right away.   It is also the only account i have with that bank (not branch, bank), with no other accounts at that bank...so my funds are air gapped.

My SIN on the other hand is very sensitive and can be used to take out loans in my name, screw with my credit rating  and can be used to create a whole fake person that can do all sorts of bad things, in my name.

And we are being required (forced) to trust Ebay's security........this place is the land of a thousand glitches.

@mrdutch1001your banking information is shared with many different online platforms, and if your bank info gets hacked, your bank will back you up. And you can get a new account. No biggie.  Once your SIN gets hacked, however, that's it. Nothing you can do about it - it's out there. It can affect your employment, your credit rating, your criminal record - I mean, the list goes on and on. The federal govt has had security in place for decades to ensure your SIN is stored securely in their systems. Ebay, it seems, is 'still working on it'. There's a reason to be leary about sharing it on their site.
