Tariffs may be paused, but lots of damage was done

It's good that tariffs were paused for 30 days, and both Chit Chats and Stallion Express are working to find solutions for customers if they become a reality in 30 days.

I couldn't take a chance on having problems shipping and shut down Saturday night, cancelled all the auctions ending Sunday without bids, and stopped all future auctions from running (I'm loading them up to start next Sunday, with bonus auctions running to make up for the loss of revenue this weekend).

I'm not sure about anyone else, but this ruined my weekend. While it would be nice to say enjoy life and don't let what you can't control affect you, the business is a big part of my life. It's what I do every day when I finish my workday at my day job, building rapport with customers and sending collectables to people who will cherish them is my joy in life. Even if only for a few days that was taken away from me. I can't say I knew what to do with myself if I wasn't going to be working on my eBay store.

Supposedly this had affects in our economy, I've been told that people in Hamilton that work in steel were affected by this, and prices will go up, even if it was called off at the 11th hour. The whole thing wreaked a lot of havoc for Canadians this week. I just can't believe we've gone back to this chaos (and round 2 is worse).

What I'm worried about now is the loss of trust I have with my buyers over the tariff threat. I have no way to directly communicate with everyone to tell them I'm going to come through with shipping their orders (at least for the next 30 days). I've reached out to a few disappointed buyers who missed out on my auctions, thankfully they were an understanding bunch and will come back to bid next weekend.

You'd think after this weekend I'd be happy, and I am, but it's going to take some time to pull out of my depressive slump that I've fallen into as a result of this bad news. At least in 30 days I'll be ready, will have to shut my store down again, but I'll be better prepared now that I know how things will play out (to some degree) if there are tariffs. What we didn't know before the order was made was if de minimis was going to go away, so I wasn't worried all last week when they were talking about it, and then on Saturday it became clear with the order. Well next time I'll know better, and hopefully there will not be a next time.

Because of just a hint of a tariff there were businesses in BC (on the news) with US contract customers that pre-emptively cancelled future orders, so yes there were ramifications. Will those customers be re-ordering. Who knows? Is that the only province that happened in? Probably not!!

My damage....

I had to send a few messages to US buyers on Sunday that I would not be shipping Monday,. Then I had to sleep in today and now I'm actually forced to go to my packing area.

Worst of all I need to get to Stallion drop off by 3:00pm, it takes 10 minutes to get there so I will need to get up early to make it there before the cut-off.

I'm expecting to see a massive pile of stuff there as I'm sure many merchants held off shipping today which is the day I usually see the biggest piles of orders.

He is still convinced shippers pay the tariffs. Maybe if it is confirmed legal dumping. It's cross-border trade only. He sees the gripes as a little pain for long term gain...somehow!!!

Now he's going after the EU with tariffs.......he says they are REALLY a problem.  4 years from now the USA won't have a friend on the planet except Putin and North Korea.

I know my sales have dropped, possibly due to the talk leading up to tariffs. I didn't notice any effect on a single country, just covering all.

And I can't explain finances, but I know all Canadian and American stocks I own took a tumble and dropped into the red from the nice green.

In Hamilton, our steel industry, someone who is working there says many orders (which were from the US) were cancelled because of expected tariffs. Now that the tariffs are off, those orders are not being reinstated and trust was lost between the customer and supplier.

That's a specific example, this kind of stuff is happening everywhere with businesses and their US customers.

My sales have dropped too. I'm packing some orders this morning (from Sunday) and they're all Canadian orders. I dealt with the American orders on Saturday night and Sunday before Stallion opened to get them out, and I had one USA order to go out yesterday.

I think trust was lost between customers of one country and suppliers in the other... and losing trust is significant damage.

Here is how it looks from a personal perspective after turning off shipping to the USA for a few days.

lotzofuniquegoodies_0-1738682907504.png

Promotion traffic was due to promotions ended at end of Jan and then being restarted.  Having Canada as your only ship to will make life very challenged for majority of Canadian sellers. Finding other markets is difficult due to the fact shipping anywhere a great distance suddenly becomes more expensive.  Customers in Mexico and Greenland just don't buy the same kind of stuff. The EU is a problem because of packaging regulations. (And possibly VAT to some extent.)

As a side shipping within Canada especially if you are on either cost is substantially more expensive compared to being located in one of the more central provinces.

Although there may be those Canadian sellers that are going to limit selling to the USA, one has to consider the reasons for doing so>a personal retalliatory measure? failure of USA buyers to understand the shipping processes? other?  It is USA Buyers that are going to decide whether to purchase from Canadian sellers, so why not let them make the decision? I for one shall march forward and continue offering my items to the USA and let those potential buyers make their own decisions...

@mrdutch1001

Going forward, IF processing/formal entry is required for ALL shipments to the USA this would seriously throw eBay estimates out the window. With eIS any clearing time is built into those windows (3 to 5 weeks). With Canada to USA customs delays are glossed over but NOT built into time frames. Average window for a tracked parcel is 10 days. 16 days happens from time to time for an assortment of reasons. Some clearly shown with tracking details, but not always. Many US buyers don't even factor customs clearing as part of the delivery time. Until we get a bit more clarity I am treading with caution. As others routinely state on here majority of buyers rarely read the the fine print or are just used to receiving US orders in a few days. (Nice to see that part about customs delays is back on both the main listing page and shipping details area.) It was MIA on the Canadian listings page for months.

Normally 80% of my sales are to the USA, and I list on dotCOM.

This weekend 80% were Canada or overseas, only 20% to the USA.
