Ebay International Shipping....very nostalgic, since it's like buying on Ebay in the 1990's

So,  i took my second venture into using Ebay International Shipping.  And....it's not very good.   Slow as slow can be.  I ordered an item from New York State to be shipped to Toronto.

Seller shipped the item lightning quick and it arrived at the EIS shipping hub in 3 days.  Great so far.    But the next step, well that still hasn't happened.  It's supposed to be shipped from the Hub to me and absolutely nothing has happened for 10 days now.  Nada.  I've checked the original tracking number on ParcelsApp and there are no updates there either, so really and truly nothing has happened.    It's just sitting at Ebay's Hub unprocessed. The expected delivery date provided by Ebay is an eye watering 3  1/2 weeks after purchase date.  If i had provided service like that to my buyers Ebay would have kicked me to the curb years ago.  But when Ebay are the ones handling the shipping, well service like that is okey dokey, i guess.  Great buyer experience and all that.

Compare and contrast that to Amazon.com's international shipping, which i've used several times.  I'm not a Prime member, it's just Amazon's regular, run in the mill shipping and i've always received the item shipped from the US in a week.....usually less.

Why can't mighty Ebay compete?

"Compare and contrast that to Amazon.com's international shipping"

"Why can't mighty Ebay compete?"

very, very simple ...because eBay IS NOT Amazon!... and that is what makes each their own unique site.

Ever been a seller on Amazon?...perhaps the experience as a seller on Amazon is also very different from being a seller on eBay, just as being a buyer on Amazon is very much different than being a buyer on eBay...

It is what it is...

C'est la vie!

Que sera, sera!

It's not just the shipping that makes the difference; it's also the warehousing of the items.

As a seller, you don't just leave your items lying around after taking pictures of them for your listings.  You weigh them, make sure you have a proper box for them, note as much relevant information as you can in "item specifics" and so on.  You have your ducks in a row so that you can get the item packed up and mailed off to the buyer as quickly as possible.

When an item is carried by or warehoused by Amazon, it also has all the information it needs at the ready to get the item packaged and sent off as quickly as possible.

When the eIS hub receives an item, it may or may not have enough information from the seller to get the item prepared for exportation immediately.  The variables aren't controlled the way they are with a shipment you or Amazon may be making.

Some of this may be the fault of some sellers.  I get the impression from the posts on the eBay.com discussion boards that despite eBay's attempts to educate sellers on eBay International Shipping, there's still a significant number out there who don't know the program exists yet are opted into it or don't know how to use it properly, and this causes delays and problems if their items go through the eIS hub.  Some of this may be the fault of the design of eBay.  eIS can't really do much to pre-vet listings except record the item's category and the item specifics, and what information is in the item specifics may not always be enough for customs purposes.  Also, I wouldn't be surprised if the eIS hub has seen significant staff reductions since the program was rolled out.

On the other hand, Amazon's shipping service is apparently a money-loser for the company, which shouldn't be too much of a surprise.  Pitney Bowes' e-commerce/logistics division has recently declared bankruptcy, after all.  What analysts can't figure out, however, is if it's supposed to be functioning as a loss-leader or if it's a financial drain on the company.

@marnotom!

Anyone else wondering why eBay would design programs like GSP and eIS and then make promises about options for buyers like combined shipping and choosing how taxes are duties and taxes are paid, then totally drop the ball on those processes? Everything else is designed within eBay for the intention...benefit of buyers EXCEPT these programs. There are no choices when it comes to how your item will be shipped like speed or service. Buyers have been complaining about the flaws to these programs for years. Have they improved? There may be purchases that go flawlessly but we will rarely if ever hear about them.

Could you imagine if Canadian sellers used something similar for shipping internationally? The blowback. There is no reasonable reason for using something that is slower and more expensive with few guarantees your item will get to you. I test drived GSP when it was first released. Out of 3 tests 2 were brutally slow. The third was cancelled at sellers end. Hearing Canadian buyers experiences with eIS gave me little desire especially seeing the costs for low value items to be forwarded to Canada to try. eIS going forward has now become a 1 and done for many buyers. Not what you could call a glowing endorsement and it's not like anyone from eBay ever makes an appearance here to address those oft reported  recurring concerns.

have never really had much need to order/purchase/buy anything from the USA in recent years as most anything I may want/need can be had right here in Canada, so I have no need to concern myself with GSP and/or eIS. However, having said that, it does not surprise me at all that eBay could care less about fixing everything that is broken with that piece of **bleep** or anything else that would benefit either sellers or buyers from Canada...eBay simply DOES NOT care about its Canadian connections...We mean nothing to eBay so we are not important...WE DON'T MATTER!

@mrdutch1001

My first 5 -10 years of eBay I purchased regularly from US sellers. I could find what I was looking for when I was looking for something specific and routinely could not find from Canadian sellers, especially when I was looking for misc. parts to fix something else I was selling. (Don't get me started when it comes to refurbished/used. That is a whole other terribly handled can of worms). Now if I do need something in particular it's Canadian on eBay or an alternative site. When I tried to order a map from a US seller using GSP and it couldn't be shipped because it came in tube it left a bad taste in my mouth. What made it even worse was my refund didn't equal my payment.  Pleading my case went nowhere. Throw in the fact that collecting tax on international purchases became the norm vs the exception  turned me and others  off even more for Canadian shoppers. Years ago I suggested an option for removing GSP for buyers. eBay has always been big on filters. Sadly that never happened. Until it is an option many (not all but most) will steer clear of using eBay as their go to. Just a sad reality of what eBay has done through the concept of cause and affect!!

interesting comments so far.

Well, since Ebay went to the trouble of creating EIS, you'd think they consider it important enough.  After my current experience and  reading all the buyer complaints all over the internet, i won't be using it again unless there is absolutely no other option.  In fact on this occasion i only used it because there was no other option except something that would make the item cost twice as much.

I routinely willingly pay a few extra dollars for an item that is not shipped via Ebay.   Gladly too.  This is my second Ebay purchase in i don't know how many months....not even sure i bought anything else this year on Ebay.  Was a time Ebay was my go to for everything.  Now it's a last resort.

You'd think the powers that be would be interested in stories like mine.....if they fix the problems, which they can, they might see a huge uptick in sales, hence fees,  hence profits.  But instead they seem content to pretend that everything is awesome.

And Canada does matter to Ebay, otherwise there wouldn't be an Ebay Canada site and there wouldn't be EIS service to Canada.  Canada's population is now about 1/8 that of the US.  Pretty sizeable market if catered to properly.

Yes...important enough to eBay's  USA sellers!...The whole concept of eIS (and former GSP) was for the benefit of USA sellers. There is NO benefit to buyers...and definitely no benefit to buyers in Canada.

The existance of eBay Canada is a minor portion of the entire eBay conglomerate...eBay Canada is insignificant as compared to many other countries around the world...

Why do you think there are so many issues on eBay Canada as compared to other eBay sites?

It is the fact that we are such a small portion of the whole...and NO we do not matter...

because if we did, eBay would put more effort into fixing what has been broken for years and years and years.

ok, let me rephrase then........Canada SHOULD matter to Ebay execs, if they were good businessmen, and women.

Yes! exactly!...but we know otherwise...and the lack of attention to this site by eBay execs shows where their priorities lie and where they don't...

EIS /GSP are Seller Protection programs.

But.

EBay is at fault for not insisting that any seller who uses the programs include the weight and dimensions of the packages product in the listing, as well as the place of manufacture.

These specifics should not be optional if the seller wants to use eIS.

They are needed for smooth passage through customs.

While many here are complaining as Canadians, we AND eBay should remember that the reason for this program was to encourage international shipping.

And any problem faced by Canadian buyers is also being faced by European and Australian and Indian and Yemeni and Philippino and Japanese buyers.

yes i know........that's why it's so surprising that after all this time it's still such a clunky system.  The only improvment i've noticed in 2 year is that they now finally show you the next tracking number that will be used after the item arrives at the shipping hub.  But they do not show the next tracking number after that,  the one used by  the entity that will be doing last mile delivery  AND DHL is still using UniUni for last mile delivery.....with them it is a **bleep** shoot whether you will see your package or not.

EDIT:  the "bleep" was the word c-r-a-p, as in c-r-a-p shoot, a reference to the dice game.  I think the censorship is a bit over the top on this forum.
