For fun topic: interesting countries shipped to..

Today shipping to 8 different countries (my record is 12 different countries in 1 mailing day)

Today's interesting country is Papua New Guinea - first time I've ever shipped there!

Reminds me of the time I shipped to Gibraltar, address was the buyers name, a street-like name with no number and GIBRALTAR. I emailed the buyer to ask for the rest of the address, they told me that was all that was needed because everybody knows everybody in Gibraltar. It got there as quick as something across the country here!!!!

What's your interesting country?

For fun topic: interesting countries shipped to..

It's funny because i've been reading the message boards a lot and i see a lot of paranoia with shipping overseas due to

'defect' marks we may get. Which had me thinking of how things used to be...

Back in the day (sounding like an oldtimer) i used to sell on yahoo auctions (it was completely free!) and things were going great.

Then Rosie O'Donnell started going on Oprah and flogging Beanie Babies on a place called ebay. Next thing you know ebay is the place to be. So i had to open an account obviouslySmiley Happy

Back then were the dark days before Paypal. Although some used Bidpay.. many did not trust this new online world and wanted to send cold hard cash to the seller, or green cashier money orders or simply a normal check. Lots of running to the bank back then and no machine deposits yet in our small town. Direct weekly chats with the bank lady.

That meant waiting for that money to arrive, then waiting a bit so the check could clear, and then ship out whatever you sold.

(a transaction could take forever, imagine that today??) There was a lot more trust back then in those dark days.

But the fun part was when someone from someplace in the world bought your item. Sweet. I'd get an envolope in the mail from Bora Bora or whatever they call it now, or Finland or Brazil with the payment. Then i would ship out and notify the buyer and let him know to please let me know when you receive (because it gave me an idea then how long things take to arrive).

I wanted overseas bidders to win auctions because it was fun.

Today it's all paranoia. Everyone wants stuff now. I received 1 defect last winter because i shipped an oversized 30 lbs box to Singapore...yet i had made sure in auction to not ship overseas, somehow he bid. (He did receive but it took 4+ months believe it or not, plus he was a very nice person but he had to open a case at the last minute to protect himself)

Anyway, as for your original question of where is my interesting country?  Well... last winter i did a cleanup of all my old letters received in the mail. I thought i had kept them but can't find right now. Hope they are still in the basement somewhere.

But i do remember, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Hong Kong, Finland, Mexico, Switzerland, France and England, Italy, Greece, Singapore last winter... Only Singapore and France, England in the last 8-10 years. Before that a lot overseas. I will check if i still have all those envelopes from past sales sometime.

Kinda miss the dark days of ebay...

Greenland is not exactly Danish.

Greenland (Greenlandic: Kalaallit Nunaat [kaˈlaːɬit ˈnunaːt]) is an autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark, located between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans, east of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Though physiographically a part of the continent of North America, Greenland has been politically and culturally associated with Europe (specifically Norway and Denmark, the colonial powers, as well as the nearby island of Iceland) for more than a millennium-- Wikipedia.

I was listing some literature about Greenland last night and looked it up.

it IS Danish. Canada has a border dispute about Hans island with Denmark, NOT with Greenland.

The picture shows our Canadian soldiers placing a Canadian flag there, and the second one shows Danes placing their Danish flag on the island.

Not a true country and not that rare I suppose but I finally made a sale to Guam this week. Shipping via USPS, first time I've had to do domestic US postage plus a customs form.

No doubt they're trying to figure out how to run a government (or even a city).

Because most of my items appeal to English-speakers only (sewing patterns, historical or otherwise), I don't get a lot of exotic destinations.  I have shipped to places like Norway, Greece, Italy and even South Korea, Japan and Russia, but that's about it.  I find it interesting to hear where all those stamp people ship.

By the way, I think the winner on this thread is the seller who mentioned she shipped to Réunion.  I happen to know quite a bit about that island from my involvement in history generally and costume history in particular.  It's a place with an exotic and fascinating history, which has had many names over the centuries.

It used to be called Île Bourbon, after the French Bourbon kings, and was the birthplace of Josephine (Napoleon's wife that is) and her sister, who both had rather sad and tragic personal histories.  Napoleon had it renamed Île Napoléon. The British grabbed it briefly during the Napoleonic wars (around 1810) and named it  Bourbon again.  Then the French were given it back and renamed it Île Bourbon, until the French revolutionaries grabbed France and renamed it Réunion (again), which it has remained since.

I'm also an avid rosarian, and one of the little known but romantic facts about this island is that it was also the birthplace of the gorgeous Bourbon roses, which caused a sensation when they were brought to France.  Most appropriately, Josephine had many of the more important Bourbon roses planted in her famous rose garden at Malmaison (which can still be seen today), and had Joseph Redouté catalogue them beautifully in colour drawings (which can still be purchased today in bound form).

The heavily scented and voluptuous Bourbon roses, now loved by rose collectors as antique rose varieties, have been continuously preserved through vegetative propagation exactly as they were in Josephine's time.  They have remained in commerce for over 200 years (and are still available today).  I have Bourbon roses in my garden, whose parent plants came from that faraway island of Île Bourbon, a.k.a. Réunion, and when I see them blooming, I often think of Josephine strolling in her beautiful rose garden.

Happy thought for a snowbound day...Woman Happy

Exhibit "A", further to the post above  -- a picture I took in July with some of my Bourbon roses in a vase (sigh, was it really warm outside once?).

The Bourbons are the deep pink and magenta-rose coloured ones.  Sorry I can't post the beautiful scents here, but trust me, they are knockouts!

Sometimes it is not where the destination is... but what was sold... and/or  where it was bought by me .

(1) Medical book on Ophthalmology... originally published in Spanish... translated into English for the North American market...

Sold the English translation to a buyer in Spain.

(2) Canadian Air Force kit bag from World War II... Had Port Arthur  painted onto the bag... but insignia was not readable.... Sold and ended up in a War Museum in the Netherlands.

(3) Found a rifle case for an Enfield...  dated to World War II... The Enfield was a ... sniper rifle...  Sold for a very good price..

Most unexpected to have found this canvas rifle case at a church sale.

(4) Person buys a book about his great-grandfather... one of Canada's Fathers of Confederation.

(5) Woman bought a book about a Russian Sculptor...  published in Russian... bought for her husband... The sculptor was her husband's uncle...

(6) A book about printmaking... a unique book... ended up in a special library collection at a University in Pittsburgh PA.

(7) A collection of books  about magic spells, Voodoo,  as well as unique  "religious activities", and in relation to Brazil, Haiti,  Iceland and Germany...

English translation of a German book  went back to Germany....

One book went to a very unusual group in California....  according to  their website

All books sold except for the last one... and that was Book Number 13....

(8) Sold a local Manitoba history book... signed by the owner.....  The buyer and the signature in the book had the same last name,  and it turned out to be the buyer's father's uncle and aunt  that had been the owners of  the book previously..

Selling on eBay can be very interesting,  unusual,  and sometimes unexpected.

My 2 most interesting sales, not for the country, but address. I sold a creamer and sugar set of Anne of Green Gables to the museum in Cape Breton, I was told it completed their set. I also sold a figurine of a beefeater to an actual beefeater living at the tower of London, UK, close to where I grew up. One sale was to Gibraltar.

A very cool destination - Kemi, Finland!

I had a sale to Kemi this past August. As part of the PayPal shipping address was "NOTPROVIDED" (LOL), I did some web research on how to address my parcel correctly.

As it turns out, Kemi is the home of the Kemi Snow Castle, the largest snow structure on earth. It is rebuilt yearly, and has been. for the past 20 years.

So, I found out how to format the address correctly and I got quite an education on snow/ice structures. A very pleasant aside, from the mundane world of shipping out a mere package.

Hi Scotty! I often have "NOTPROVIDED" as part of foreign addresses, particularly to Russia and other European countries. I had always assumed that it was because the person had not filled in the 3rd? address line. I always just cut/white it out (I cut and paste the PAYPAL address onto my packages) and so far they've all gotten there ok.

Hi ricarmic;

I have shipped quite a number of items to the Orient and western Europe, but this was my first "NOTPROVIDED".  I was going to do exactly what you suggest, provided I could not find a solution that made me feel better about shipping out the parcel.

I searched first for postal formats for Finland, and found the solution. I wanted to check this with some real Kemi addresses, including the buyers and that is how I found  the Kemi Snow Castle.

I often find that the PayPal supplied ship to address is formatted incorrectly. For example, every Canadian address is shown with the Postal Code as the last line. Of course I change this manually when I cut and paste, or when I use PayPal to purchase the label, the formatting changes to the correct Canadian format upon generating the label.

Hi again Scotty! Now you've piqued my interest, was there something missing from the Finland address? (I'm double piqued because just this morning I have a Finland address with NOTPROVIDED in it.....NOTPROVIDED looking like it would be the 3rd line in the address...comparing against the view order details nothing is missing)

Sometimes,  one runs into an address that looks too unusual...  not what one would expect... and usually   it turns out to be correct

Many times it is a North American address.

That is when I do some checking

(1) Mapquest is  super way to track down the correctness of an address..

http://www.mapquest.ca/

I have used it often... sometimes just to verify....  and many times  the address was correct.

But... the odd time you do find something missing....

(2) Google goes around this world of ours... taking pictures....   Google an address and track down where a buyer lives.....  and you end up standing on the street looking at where the buyer lives.

--------------------------------

There was once a very strange address in a borough of New York City... so much different than anything I would expect.....

Found the address  on Mapquest  and then viewed the buyer's residence on Google...

Everything was verified as ... correct

-------------------------------------

If the buyer is from a foreign country , where the language does not use our alphabet.....such as Chinese or Russian... I will ask to have the address forwarded by the buyer in the language of the destination country...

I will print the address as received from the buyer.....The address on the parcel will be in English  and then in the language of the destination country.
