Canada Post Possible Stike

What happens now that orders are in the mail with a possible expected delivery date of September 30 and early October, what happens if not received there is no way of knowing whether these items will be received after strike is over.  Will eBay delay delivery date?

From the CUPW Website...

Your negotiating committee worked hard all weekend in an attempt to get a negotiated collective agreement.  Unfortunately, many key issues remain unresolved.

Urban Ops (The Urban workers) -----Some issues have been resolved, while other issues remain unresolved.

After all this time in negotiations, there has been no real progress towards resolving any of the key RSMC (The Rural workers) demands.

It is now time to send Canada Post a very strong message that we must have a negotiated settlement now!

Negotiations have stalled primarily on money issues........  The key words are ........

No Real Progress.....specifically the Rural workers.

What next?      Negotiations continue , but things are getting more difficult.

We shall see.......

Re: Canada Post Possible Stike

My store on eBay is on vacation... But.... I am business looking for new inventory and listing the books I have found.

Found over 100 books at a three-day local charity sale at the end of September.

Very busy... very focused.

Found four books today... Two Alberta local histories... A religious book original published in 1953,  and then a book about different world religions, and published in Ukrainian.... a Ukrainian perspective....  lots of good value....

I am relaxed and do not have to be concerned with having parcels suspended in Canada Post.

Re: Canada Post Possible Stike

Its just kind of weird because you seem the most concerned out of everyone, to the point where it feels like you want the strike to happen just to prove your point. CUPW is always going to post gloom and doom releases regardless of what is happening, pretty standard negotiation tactics.

My volume has been higher than ever the last month so I'm just rolling with it. Plus we have written notice that eBay will back us if any parcels get stuck in limbo as a result of any strike action.

Re: Canada Post Possible Stike

It was in 2016 that the store was on vacation for July and August.

I am following the same approach in 2018.   My choice is based on my personal need for a vacation.

The CUPW  daily reports have been quite "quiet"  compared to what is found in news reports on the internet.

Many who use Canada Post have switched to other delivery options.....  This puts Canada Post in a difficult position....  Various news reports have reported that Canada Post delivered over one million parcels each day over the Christmas period of 2017.    The longer these negotiations continue, the greater the monetary loss to Canada Post.  Many who have left Canada Post may not return  when everything is settled between the union and Canada Post.

In order to be self-sustaining Canada Post must make some major adjustments.  The union chooses to make demands that do not allow Canada Post to make these adjustments.

Canada Post is a Crown Corporation whose activities are defined by the Canada Post Corporation Act.  If Canada Post is no longer a Crown Corporation it is not controlled  by a unique "Union Act" for Crown Corporations.      This could mean that CUPW would  lose its power to negotiate as it does  if Canada Post is no longer a Crown Corporation.

The question becomes... What  happens to CUPW if Canada Post is no longer a Crown Corporation?

Many Corporations that once were Crown Corporations, became most successful when their status changed....

The Canadian National Railway was once a Crown Corporation.

Some of the discussion  on the internet, and in relation to Canada Post, is directed at making Canada Post an essential service..     and then there could never be a strike by the union or a lockout by Canada Post.

CUPW is just reminding the union membership what that means, and how it works.

... negotiated two agreements with Canada Post to ensure the delivery of many government cheques and the safety of live animals in the event of a lockout or strike. ...

Something that has been arranged for decades during times of dispute.

CUPW is communicating to its membership.... and also indirectly  to Canada Post.

One gets the impression that CUPW Is ready for a strike.

We can conclude that Canada Post is watching... and also the Government of Canada.

An update from the CUPW website.....

"Negotiations are continuing in an effort to achieve new collective agreements for both the RSMC and Urban Operations bargaining units. The parties are working long hours to achieve this goal. We remain committed to negotiating collective agreements, as we have since the beginning of this process. We will not issue a 72-hour notice today."

I am willing to go out on another limb here and repeat my prediction from one hundred messages on this post ago: we won't see a postal strike or lockout in 2018.

You got that right.

So much drama.

Ain't no high ground, and doesn't benefit anyone.

I've been through many a labour dispute, and they ain't what they used to be.

Ain't gonna happen.

Like I said 'one hundred messages on this post ago', Relax...Business as usual.

I don't think there will be a strike, just "threatening" by both.

Re: Canada Post Possible Stike

Many sellers say there will be no strike.

If that is so...  Why do negotiations continue?

What about a lockout by Canada Post?

Re: Canada Post Possible Stike

I remember the strike in 2011-2012..  It was very frustrating during the first period of a rotating strike by the Union.  Selling stopped once the rotating started.

Today, there is too much invested with my selling  eBay...

This potential of a strike is only one problem.....for me...  Having the store on vacation gives me time to work on something else.  This something else was adjusted  yesterday, with more to happen.

The best thing for me in 2011-2012, was to put the store on vacation.....  and when the strike was over, i had close to 300 new listings on eBay.

In 2018, there will be lots of new listings on eBay,  and most important  I  am not worried about postal negotiations. ... and parcels being "stuck" in a mail system

Continued negotiations and the possibility of a strike or lockout create a situation  best described as "interfering with business"   This is a legal situation, but difficult to prove.

Canada Post has already said there will be NO LOCKOUT if there are rotating strikes.

Are rotating strikes likely?

If there is no agreement by early November then yes.

The deadline is when the union's strike mandate expires. The CUPW won't go back to the members for a new strike mandate. Once used there is no strike mandate time limit.

Re: Canada Post Possible Stike

It was in 2011-2012 that Canada Post did not like the rotating strikes

and ... that is when it became a lockout by Canada Post

People stopped using Canada Post.

and then..... Followed  about two weeks later with a back to work order by the Government
