Canada Post Possible Stike

What happens now that orders are in the mail with a possible expected delivery date of September 30 and early October, what happens if not received there is no way of knowing whether these items will be received after strike is over.  Will eBay delay delivery date?

Backlog is 600 trailers containing 2500 parcels each? Canada Post is 30 Days or 1.5 million parcels behind in mid-November.

Our only hope as shoppers and sellers lays in back-to-work legislation.

Yes, and even if they are ordered back in the next few days it could be mid December by the time the backlog is cleared. It is unbelievable how thoughtless the union bosses have become. By not allowing members to vote on the latest offer they very well might have sealed their fate in having the Feds step in when they could have gotten a better deal if they had bargained in a reasonable manner.

The Union will get that last offer, minus the $1000 bonus for signing before midnight on November 17, 2018.

In 2011, after the Government ordered the workers to get back to work,  the judge said that the union should have received the last offer when the Government ordered the union back to work.  The workers had received a modified, lower value offer.

The last entry....

"Protection for victims of domestic violence in our collective agreement."

.....is most interesting.

There are several other considerations that make one wonder what is happening....

I'd guess that is CUPW wishing to include the cancelled 2018 work legislation in Ontario that gave victims of domestic violence paid time off work.

So what are our options? Is ebay supporting buyers with INR requests due to the Canada Post strike which does not make it our fault parcels are stuck somewhere?

Does anyone know if parcels shipped expedited are moving through to the states or also sitting in trailers? Last parcels I've sent have "acceptance" at my local post office, but the "in transit" bar has been moving. With no other updates I may add. Contacting Canada Post is totally useless, as it always has been. They will say "oh i see what you see". uhh what?

Is Canada Post going to offer discounted rates for expedited and express services now that time delivery guarantee has been taken away? As a seller and buyer I am soooo frustrated with this, the union keeping the country hostage. And Canada Post still demanding ridiculous rates for international shipping. It is one of the highest in North America!

I guess we can make a difference with our votes if the government doesn't step in. You can have your issues, as a union but, don't keep an entire country hostage just because you're not getting your way. 

Anyone know a cheaper way to ship to the states? Fedex and DHL seem expensive to me.

Justin has no backbone, they likely won't step in and try to wait as much as possible before truly getting pressured with Cyber Monday and Black Friday sales pushing through. I can only imagine how much money is being lost already, it does also seem unfair that these look like manipulation tactics by the union which makes me really angry as a Canadian who relies on Canada Post for my business as a cheaper alternative for shipping to the states. I would like to know why the union didn't put the offer to a vote and just ASSUMED all the workers would be AOKAY with keeping up rotating strikes which from my understanding just make it worse for them. In the end, it will be more of the same - hatred towards postal workers, hatred toward the union, resentment and frustration with the liberal government for keeping this going on for so long and so close to Christmas. Does the union not realize that with this backlog its members will now have to work twice as hard, twice as fast to clear it up under tremendous country wide pressure to get parcels out before Christmas? Won't that in turn cause MORE injuries? SMH. What a beepin' mess!

PS- anyone have any insight to the trailers at the Mississauga plant? Have they been moving/clearing out? I am guessing workers are back on the job in Sauga/Toronto?

The biggest drag on clearing the system backlog is the no overtime work action.

If you are located in area of Canada that is close to a crossborder shipper, you can save some money on shipping for USA sales. Way it works: you get the package to the shipper, they take it across the border for a small fee, and the parcel gets mailed and travels at cheap, tracked USPS domestic rates.

Currently this can be done for items worth less than $800us.

From the CUPW website... about today, Sunday, November 18

CUPW tried to contact Canada Post.... No response

CUPW tried to contact the Minister of Labour ... No Response

CUPW chose not to accept the offer on November 17...   and now the union will have to face a new reality..... 

Tomorrow, Monday November   19  will be an most interesting day. 

Could it be that Sunday will be viewed as the ..... Quiet before the Storm...

Even with back to work legislation which I doubt Trudeau will do, they cannot get this backlog cleared to get things moving on time for Christmas. And there is no way we as sellers will be able to say with any certainty that goods will arrive on time.  Canada Post might as well lock them out.  It is getting ugly.

These are the main demands and offers at the moment.

The union's latest offer proposes:

• A 2.9 per cent annual wage increase.
• Double-time pay for working a sixth or seventh day.
• New wage advancements for temporary workers, based on working 1,000 hours in a fiscal year.
• (New hires have been getting a different and less generous pay rate than more senior workers.)
• Injury pay at 80 per cent of regular salary.
• Improvements to the company's short-term disability plan.
• (The union claims that Canada Post's injury rates are considerably higher than in other industries.)

The offer from Canada Post that the union rejected over the weekend proposed:

• A two per cent annual wage increase (plus a signing bonus of up to $1,000.)
• Overtime pay for working more than 40 hours.
• (Although I thought that was the national standard? )
• 500 new full-time positions over three years.
• (Considering that the youngest Boomers are now 54, and about half of us are already retired, this just sounds like normal hiring to me.)
• The creation of a $10-million health and safety fund to address worker concerns.

Letter Carrier salaries - CA$52,994/yr

Manager salaries -  CA$87,455/yr

Supervisor salaries - CA$61,722/yr

Postal Clerk salaries -  CA$20/hr

Which strikes me as odd, since it has been my understanding that counter clerks are usually promoted from letter carrier ranks. Seems strange the clerk would be taking a $6 an hour pay cut, even if the work is less physical.

I talked to my town's main CP supervisor.

He confirmed 400 trailers are still stuck in Toronto. I believe this is down from the 600 from last week which is a start. It means 200 trailers have been unloaded fairly quickly. My parcels sent between Nov 9 and Nov 14 have no status updates. However, a parcel I sent on Nov 16 to the states is already IN the states. He couldn't tell me where my parcels were except they may be sitting in a trailer despite the in transit status bar moving. I will wait and see before putting in claims.

Email the PM won't do anything as they don't see those emails. However, you can spam the union facebook page and/or other facebook pages, social media platforms with your anger.

Today I read, the latest update- government is giving CP a couple more days to settle this. A COUPLE MORE DAYS? Liberals are counting on union votes in the future so they are treading carefully. I know I will consider this with my vote, with allowing the union to keep the country hostage for this long and during the busiest time period of the year.

I would also like to know why CP hasn't offered discounts on its rates yet considering we are still paying the same amount for services that are supposed to be working but arent. An expedited package sitting in a trailer since Nov 9?  Unacceptable. 

I have been emailing my customers updates and so far they have been responsive and nice about it. I have also been sending messages prior to shipping to see if they want another method of shipping.

I called ebay yesterday for support on INR cases, staff said to contact the member to member department specifically if this happens. As ebay will support both the buyer and seller and act to negotiate any problems. I'm glad ebay cares, it would be sooo nice if our PM did too.

But ya know... let's keep the country hostage for another "couple of days" (which really means - a week or more)
