That doesn’t sound like eBay’s style of wording announcements, and what the heck is the “Inform Act,” anyway?

I’m betting the email’s “from” address looks fishy, too.

If you sell on list or sell on .com then yes I would assume they will apply.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • The INFORM Consumers Act aims to create a safe and transparent online buying process and requires marketplaces like eBay to collect, verify, and disclose certain information about high-volume sellers.
  • A high-volume seller is someone who has sold 200 or more new or unused items totaling more than $5,000 in a 12-consecutive-month period over the last 24 months on ebay.com.
  • If you meet that criteria, we’ll need to collect and verify some identification and contact information.
  • High-volume sellers will need to keep their information up to date and we’ll ask you to review it annually.
  • If you reach an annual total revenue of $20,000, we’re required to include your name (or company name) and full physical address in the buyer's purchase confirmation emails and order details. However, there are some exceptions that allow us to share a partial address with buyers. For example:

If your address is your residential address, only your state and country will be shown.

If you use a different address for product returns, then that return address will be displayed.

I also list on.COM  and never received the email...but I may also add that I am a "casual /infrequent" seller with a sale here and there throughout the year ... In the past I have had the message from eBay (maybe it's a once a year thing)  to confirm my account details/personal information and I believe the last one was about 6 months ago.

And I recently had to confirm my ID here on dotCA.

The passport I had used originally was not acceptable, and I finally went with my BC Identity card.

 

This seems to be part of an effort to stop fencing of stolen goods online, by insisting that sellers of new goods prove that they were purchased and did not fall off a truck.

I suspect it is because your account from 1998 was originally registered on .com. the Inform Act applies to Americans, other countries may have their own requirements that eBay has to comply with.

 

This account I post here with is super low volume (only a few hundred Dollars in sales last year) so they have not bothered me. That said I get notifications from eBay on a regular basis to sign up for an eBay MasterCard, the invitation clearly states that only US residents can apply. So whay do they send them to me (have been for at least 10 years), probably because deep in their systems they think I'm an American.

 

Accounts I opened many years ago directly on .ca do not recieve these messages.

It's a lot more than stolen goods.........mostly it's for

 

People engaging in money laundering

People who are either illegal residents or legal but do not hold a Green Card or work permits.

People involved in tax evasion

I'm in the same boat, I've had to confirm my ID on this account. I too was first registered on the dot com account (before there was a CA version), so when the inform act came about I was asked to upload ID.
