About time!

They are not forced to vote by any means. The union was blocking them from voting. I could be wrong, but I saw it from a reddit's post saying postal workers pay about $90 a month to the union. Postal workers should be actively involved in the matter to get their money worth.

forced is a strange word. They don't HAVE to vote, but at least now they will have the opportunity to vote and have their say in the negotiations. Which after so many months seems a reasonable move to me....the authority they gave the union to negotiate seems long out of date to me, so now they can have a direct say in these long stalled negotiatons. They can vote to reject the CP offer if they want....but now they can make the choice instead of the union bosses making it for them.
There is no such thing as 'forced' democracy.

To all - my title was written in haste - I understand no workers are being forced to vote. They can abstain if they see fit. This announcement was coming in another thread - if admins see fit they can remove this post.

The union didn't want a vote on a proposition that was so far from their demands that it was 100% certain it will be denied by its members; it would be a waste of time. Anyone who ever was member of an union and went to a couple of meetings knows how this works: a committee is set for that type of negotiations, and members give this committee a mandate with specific goals. If the goals aren't met, the committee can simply refuse to sign whatever the employers are offering without having to go back to explain why every time and put it to vote. That's union basics. Now when there's a stalemate, the union should definitely go back to its members to clarify and adjust their mandate.
CPC just want that vote to happen so they can pretend to be the righteous part in the conflict, because it won't go through for sure. The meddling of a federal mediator has always been favorable to CPC in the past, so it's clearly the same strategy they are going for. Meanwhile, the real issues behind the strike (aside from money) will continue to cause problems in the future because arbitration never answers such issues, only wages.

Australia.
Voting for the federal and each state and territory parliament is compulsory for Australian citizens over the age of 18.
Voters who do not vote are fined.
But voters who do vote get a sausage.

I don't think it's going to go to arbitration if the vote fails. Canada Post really can't given the structural changes they HAVE to make. I suspect the government will either declare it an essential service and impose a contract, they'll roll it into a government department where they have full control, or they'll privatize it (which would be really bad, just ask the UK). I'm hoping either for the vote to pass (and I think there is a real chance it could) or option 2.

interesting.......nobody should be forced to vote in a true democracy. What if you don't like any of the candidates......not voting makes a statemen all of its own.
I would like a sausage though.. 🙂

Unhappy with all, that's when you vote for None-of-the-above at the bottom of the ballot....
In Ontario, if you want to make an election voting statement, you show up and refuse the ballot when it is offered to you -- refused ballots are counted in the totals.

It doesn't look like the sausage is free. It's a benefit sale that uses the mandatory election to prey on clients... 😉
