What happens now that orders are in the mail with a possible expected delivery date of September 30 and early October, what happens if not received there is no way of knowing whether these items will be received after strike is over.  Will eBay delay delivery date?

Just come in from Canada Post website

"At this point there is a backlog of over 150 trailers in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal of items waiting to be unloaded and processed, with more arriving every day. While the rotating strikes continue, we are making every effort to work through the backlog as quickly as possible, but delays will continue."

Got a note from a customer this morning about a missing purchase.

Bought on Friday the 19th, strike in Victoria the 22nd, in Toronto on the 23rd and 24th. He's in Toronto area. Another strike in Toronto area today.

Actually, it's not even behind to my mind since I mentally allow two weeks for delivery.

We'll see.

I couldn't find this, I'm assuming it is on the Canada Post website?

The only problem is context. How many trailers normally arrive each day across those 3 of their large/st sites? If they get 300 trailer loads a day, it means they're behind half a day.

Numbers can be used to slant the view based on how they are presented. As is always the case in these negotiation processes, each side picks/highlights numbers that elicit strong responses in their favour.

Personally I don't know who to blame or feel sorry for again (besides sellers like us and our/canada post's customers of course!), same as was the case 2 years ago.

CUPW Has told workers not to work overtime.....Not more than 8 hours a day, not more than 40 hours a week.

If mail is piling up......  do not work overtime.

CUPW currently has no contract with Canada Post...... No overtime...... Workers cannot be forced to work overtime....

The rotating strikes are having a negative effect at certain locations..  as reported by Canada Post

There is a backlog of mail trailers  at facilities known to handle  a major amount of mail each day... that includes Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal.

On top of this ... the union has added workers will NOT work ... overtime ....over 8 hours a day ... 40 hours a week..... Overtime would be required to clear that backlog of trailers.

As the backlog of mail trailers increases we can then see the beginning of a plugged mail system at certain locations...

----------------------------------

Rotating strikes gives the impression that the mail will continue to move.....  The reality is that the mail system will eventually slow down...

perhaps even to a very slow action...

and perhaps a system plugged with mail that cannot move.....

as an online seller who sells an item here and there, now and again, once in awhile, from time to time, those few and far between sales will have very little impact for me no matter how long the rotating strikes last. I think my last online sale was about 6 weeks ago...

What's having a negative effect on me is seeing "strike" misspelt in the title of this thread.  It's really starting to get my goat.

Some good information in this thread about events on the ground with the strike. I couldn't help but think given the current situation that this might be an excellent time for eBay Canada to launch their Speedpak service in Canada with a logistics partner not associated with Canada Post.

Judging from complaints that would be offering a service that is even slower than strike bound Canada Post....

Kitchener-Waterloo (ON) as of 12:01am ET, Nov 2

gets added by CUPW to:

  • Hamilton (ON)
  • Moncton (NB)
  • North Bay (ON)
  • Ottawa (ON)
  • Outaouais-Québécois (QC)
  • Regina (SK)

No mail for me today as I'm in Cambridge (covered by the K-W local).  Hopefully, I'll have a sale in the next few days that makes waiting for the last "free" Tuesday worthwhile.

This stike (strike) is something that is definitely starting to affect all Canadian sellers on eBay that use Canada Post.

Things are starting to add up in the wrong direction for Canada Post.  What is next?

Maybe we should vote for a lockout.....  The sooner the better!!!

Then the Government will say.....  Get back to work!!!!!!    as they did in 2011

You locked yourself out in the middle of September.  Your choice.

Many of us continue to sell and ship. And make money.

Personally, I figure Canada Post should only pay employees by cheque (instead of direct deposit) during the strike(s).  The good old the-cheque-is-in-the-mail scheme.

I needed a vacation.    There have been many charity book sales, resulting in my finding lots of new inventory.....  and the books have been and will continue to be  put into my store.

I have invested too much into my store .... 15 years... on eBay to let Canada Post make a mess of my selling and shipping options.

There are also several other personal problems that I have had to take care of.   I needed some clean vacation time to take care of those situations....

Everything is starting to look good  and  I am ready to get back to selling and shipping on eBay.

The most important  thing for me was the vacation time, and my focus to make things happen.

I have been following the Canada Post situation ...  closely.

I do remember some of the frustration from 2011....  The fact that my store was on vacation  for two months... July and August ....  in 2016.....  made my choice of going on vacation an easy option in 2018.

The most important thing for me is that I have learned  that selling on eBay  keeps me busy.  I had to determine if I can some day live without selling on eBay.  That day may come soon.  I keep saying 3 to 5 years more of selling on eBay .... but without knowing when that 3 to 5 years will start.

Something happened about two weeks ago that helped me flush away all of my thoughts for about three hours.

It was a hockey game......  The Winnipeg Jets were playing.  The game was very raucous, very noisy.... very, very loud.....  Things have changed dramatically since I last went to a Jets game.... many , many years ago.

My thoughts were wiped clean as the game progressed, and I started new after the game....

I am most ready to make it happen on eBay....  I now have a totally new focus for selling on eBay.

The Canada Post situation... the hockey game  and everything else I have done since September 17 when the store was put on vacation....  in response to the Canada Post situation ..... have helped me to rethink...  realign my approach to selling  on eBay.

According to the original eBay Canada announcement  has the last point below actually happened? It's really not business as usual for most Dot Ca eBay sellers.

****************************************

Should a disruption occur, eBay will remain open for business, and we’re asking you to do the same. Here are some of the adjustments we recommend making to help minimize the impact of a labour disruption on your eBay business:

  • Keep your listings active. If you want to manage buyer expectations, consider increasing your handle time.
  • Add an alternative carrier to your listings, such as UPS, Purolator, or FedEx.  ????
  • Consider freight forwarding companies such as Chit Chats—a seller favourite.
  • If you don’t offer local pickup, consider starting now. Let buyers in your area know that they can get your items quickly and easily.

eBay is working with internal teams to monitor and adjust estimated delivery dates and eBay Money Back Guarantee timelines to ensure that you are not penalized for late shipments due to the labour disruption. If the threatened disruption occurs, we will contact your impacted buyers in Canada and the US to inform them of possible delays.

And how do "we" do that?

Why would I root for a lockout? My outbound parcels are traveling through one of more strike zones — all of them regardless of whether they are international or domestic — and they’re still meeting and exceeding their delivery standards. I’m not seeing ANY delays. Rotating strikes or not.

My inbound parcels are also on time.

There is zero cause for angst here.

As sellers on eBay we have absolutely no control on what CUPW, the union, or Canada Post  will do.

We all want this action to end..... the sooner...  the better... and without any disruption other than rotating strikes......

History ....  as in 2011...  says  something totally different.....

The Winnipeg Free Press  published an article about the Postal situation in 2018 a few days ago.

This 2018 situation was compared to what happened in 1987.   In 1987 it was all mail that was affected.....  Everyone was unhappy with no mail being handled or delivered.

The workers were ordered back to work....  Some workers delayed their return to work....    and there were fights with the people on strike outside Canada Post facilities.

----------------------------

1987 was a time before the internet had become a major component in our lives.

Today many things happen over the internet...

(1) We receive our bills via email

(2) We pay those bills using online banking

(3) We communicate using emails.

(4) Then we  now have all those online  sites where can get together and have fun...

The only thing that we  can not send using an internet option are parcels... big and bigger parcels.

and then.... we as online sellers are affected by everything that is happening and could happen with Canada Post.

We can use alternative services but they do not have the same capabilities as Canada Post.  These services have a limited capacity and they do not deliver to the very remote areas of Canada... where ..... The parcels get transferred to Canada Post.
